Choose a topic that interests you. This is probably the most important thing you can do when selecting a research topic. Your teacher might constrain your selection, but if you are given any opportunity to influence topic selection, you should thoughtfully choose a topic about which you are eager to learn more.

Since your research paper will require hours upon hours of reading, thinking, and writing about your topic, you will want to choose a topic that will at least capture your attention. Think of those burning questions that you have inside. Those may be the topics on which you write with the most passion.

Research papers, by definition, must be based on research you do yourself. Sometimes research paper topic ideas are rejected because the research has already been done and too much information is available. Ideally basic background information should be available but information on the specific research paper should be limited.

As a result you have more freedom to choose sub-topics and fresh, different approaches are welcome. Search for a sub-topic you are interested in and look for a fresh approach. At this level your tutors are not looking for original research but at how you gather and present your evidence.

Choosing a topic is also important. While sometimes the student can choose from a list of suggested topics, he may also be allowed to choose one of his own. Choosing a topic itself requires some research to be aware of the existing knowledge in that subject and to be aware of the gaps that one can fill with research. The topic can also be fluid and change as the research progresses.

Writing a research paper has a lot in common with constructing a building: both require careful planning upfront and thoughtful execution throughout, but most of all both need a lot of hard work to come out right. Perhaps the biggest pitfall when writing a research paper is dumping hours into the process, only to realize that you will not be able to complete the task you began. This requires you to pivot, revise your thesis, change your strategy, and possibly scrap your whole rough draft, but lets not get hasty.
